The large dowels are called Poly-Dowels® and they have a patented design with interior channels guaranteeing their strength. They are perfect for heavy tiers and large tiered cakes. They are easy to cut with pruning shears.
The small dowels, called CakeSafe Dowels are wonderful for cakes up to three tiers, are still very strong (much stronger than straws), and are easy to cut with scissors. They're also great for use as wire holders in your cakes and appliqué for sugar flowers.
